Disaster Recovery Planning:

Disaster recovery is the process, policies and procedures of restoring operations critical to the resumption of business, including regaining access to data (records, hardware, software, etc.), communications, workspace, and other business processes after a natural or human-induced disaster.

To increase the opportunity for a successful recovery of valuable records, a well-established and thoroughly tested disaster recovery plan must be developed. A disaster recovery plan (DRP) should also include plans for coping with the unexpected or sudden loss of communications and/or key personnel. Disaster recovery planning is part of a larger process known as business continuity planning (BCP).

Planning Considerations:

A Systematic approach to records management is essential in the recovery from any disaster. As part of your recovery plan, consideration of these areas is critical.

1. Reduction of storage costs
2. Expedited customer service
3. Federal, state and local regulatory compliance

Your records must be retained to verify legal and regulatory requirements, as well as proof of financial transactions. These retained records are used for verification of sound business practices. Retention schedules vary by document type, and regulation, and should be approved by your legal consul. Record protection, recovery, or salvage may include a variety of different media types such as:

1. Hardcopy Paper Files
2. Microfilm and/or Microfiche
3. Photographs - Analog/Digital
4. Magnetic Tape, Floppy Discs
5. Scanned Images/Indexes
